Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
