British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
