Seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
