The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
